Owls can see much better than humans in sunlight. They can dilate and contract the eye pupil easily and control the light. It is not right owls’ eye retina can adjust according to light. So, many people have a misconception that owls can’t see in the sunlight. Owls are nocturnal birds means they usually remain active during the night and sleep during the daytime. It is like a mirror image through this, the light reflects the light source, and the eyes shine. Studies say that owls can see 35-100 times better than humans at night.ĭo you know how the owl’s eye shine? There is a layer called tapetum lucidum behind the retina. Rods work better in dim light that’s why owls’ night vision is excellent. There are more rod photoreceptors in the owl’s eye compared to the number of cones. Rods detect the light and movement, and cones identify the color. Owl’s retina has two types of cells in the retina rods and cones. Owls’ pupils can get wide to let more light as possible hit the light-sensitive retina at the back of the eye. They can perfectly see in the dim and dark. They are nocturnal birds, so they have incredible night vision. Owls are fantastic hunters despite having no eyeballs. Not only spectacular eyes with three eyelids, but nature has gifted owls an outstanding vision. It protects and keeps the eye surface clean. While sleeping, the lower eyelid closes, and the third eyelid is called the nictitating membrane. When the owl blinks its eye, the upper eyelid get closes. one is for blinking, the second for sleeping, and the third eyelid is to keep the eye tube clean. Owls’ enormous eyes have the uniqueness of having three eyelids. Generally, All birds have two eyelids, one for sleeping and the other for keeping the eye clean. It plays a vital role in their nighttime hunting. They can turn their head at 270 degrees to the right or left and up to 90 degrees up to down. Owls’ famous and incredible ability is they can turn their neck in either direction. we can roll our eyes to the right and left while keeping our heads still, but owls move their head instead of eyes to look around. That is called sclerotic rings these fixed rings hold the owls’ eyes and cannot let them move. They have a special skeletal structure to support and hold these huge eyes. Owls’ eyes are gigantic amazingly, these eyes fit in the relatively small skulls of owls.
